Japan’s new PM says she has no plan to dismiss parliament

(MENAFN) Japan’s newly appointed Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said she has no intention of dissolving parliament following her return from the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in South Korea, according to reports.

During a press briefing in South Korea, Takaichi emphasized that her top priority is to fulfill her commitments to the Japanese public, particularly in advancing key economic initiatives.

When asked about the possibility of dissolving the Lower House, she replied, “I don't have time to consider that at the moment.”

Takaichi, who became Japan’s first female prime minister after being elected last month, succeeded Shigeru Ishiba. Ishiba stepped down amid internal dissatisfaction within the ruling Liberal Democratic Party following a string of electoral losses.

Earlier in the week, Takaichi hosted US President Donald Trump in Tokyo and then traveled to Malaysia to participate in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit.

Her trip to South Korea for the APEC summit marked her first visit to the country as prime minister. While there, she held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung on the sidelines of the event.
